From the 1892 Paris Salon, here is a stunning, moody, and wonderfully expressive maritime engraving by Dutch painter Hendrick Willem Mesdag, 'Retour des Barques de Pecheurs' [The Return of the Fishing Boats], gleaned from the 1892 catalog of the Societe des Artistes Francais et Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
To quote their catalog, the main task of the Societe, begun in 1880, was to organize the Salon, since the French government had ceased to officially perform this function.
Mesdag was a medaled member of the Salon since 1870, a successful businessman and art collector, and a Dutch Master of the maritime arts - his 'Retour des Barques de Pecheurs' was selected for the Salon's 1892 catalog.
The engraving is titled, on card, blank on its reverse. The card measures 8.25" x 12.25" (21x31 cm) and the image measures 5" x 6.5" (13x17 cm). The edges are smooth and clear and there are no marks, folds, creases or tears.
The engraving marks are clearly seen on the card and the paper's margins show some tanning, with foxing seen along the outer edges. A handsome image to frame or perhaps you'll use in your art.
You are purchasing an original 1892 paper and it does not have watermarks. I will send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.
